about NEMTA

NEMTA was founded in 2000 to meet the needs of instrumental and vocal teachers in the New England area, including ongoing teacher training, representation in schools, the provision of up-to-date information about taxation matters and relevant business practices, as well as the need for social interaction and the stimulation afforded by contact with people in the same profession.

Our meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month. Supper and socialising follows each meeting. The details of the next meeting can be checked by clicking on the "up-coming events" tab.

The aims of this instrumental and vocal Teachers’ Association are:

  • To support and protect the character, status and common interests of the private music teachers in Northern N.S.W.
  • To encourage professional development, especially amongst the younger teachers who are beginning their teaching careers
  • To organise workshops and lectures including visiting artists
  • To provide a forum for encouragement and the sharing of knowledge
  • To foster productive links between the community and NEMTA teachers
  • To demonstrate clearly to the community that we have a strong professional commitment and tangible support for one another.

Code of practice

  1. Member teachers undertake to respect the dignity and general well-being of each of their students without discrimination.
  2. Each teacher shall provide the best music tuition possible. NEMTA members undertake to extend their professional expertise and knowledge wherever possible and to co-operate in the sharing of such knowledge with colleagues and students.
  3. Each teacher will ensure that students’ personal details remain confidential.
  4. Each teacher should encourage students to engage with enthusiasm in their personal musical development.
  5. NEMTA members undertake to act within the guidelines of generally accepted professional principles in the practice of their profession. Due respect shall be given to such matters as courtesy, reliability and consideration of the needs of both teacher and student.
  6. NEMTA members shall demonstrate friendly support, encouragement and respect for the skills and professionalism of their colleagues in the Association.
